The Cast of Characters (return to cast list)
Government: Karl Rove
Assistant to the President and Senior Advisor to the President

In their new book about Karl Rove called THE ARCHITECT (excerpt and FRESH AIR interview, 9/6/06), James Moore and Wayne Slater repeat a conversation Rove had with a friend about being an Agnostic. Rove, the man who got Bush elected and is working hard to hold on to the Republican majority in both Houses, is a true Machiavellian, and has been responsible for the ties between the Bush Administration and conservative Christians, including Catholics (including setting up the "Office of Faith-Based Initiatives" as a form of political patronage and payback for votes). He appeals to their "Moral Values" for their votes, insisting the this Administration agrees with their "values," where in actuality he and most of the NeoCons are Agnostics and/or Atheists, for whom "values" means free markets and military world domination. For them, the ends justify the means, and morality is for suckers. (JP)

"There is no more compelling subject in contemporary American politics, and perhaps in our country's electoral history, than Karl Christian Rove. In everything he's done, George W. Bush's senior political and policy adviser has had a transforming effect on how democracy functions in the United States. Rove's grand vision, complex strategies, and knockdown tactics exceed everything dreamed up by other consultants. Rove may just be very, very good at what he does, or he might exhibit genius." (Wayne Slater & James Moore, THE ARCHITECT: KARL ROVE)

"Karl Rove has been active in Republican party politics since the 1970s, when he knew Bush's father, George Herbert Walker Bush. Rove ran the elder Bush's unsuccessful primary campaign for president against Ronald Reagan in 1980, and then worked in Texas for Republican politicans, among them Senator Phil Gramm. Rove started a consulting firm, Karl Rove & Company, in 1981 and is credited with statewide political successes. He helped guide George W. Bush to win the gubernatorial election there in 1994, then ran Bush's presidential campaign in 2000. A close advisor to the president, he manages the Office of Political Affairs, the Office of Public Liaison and the Office of Strategic Initiatives at the White House." (from who2.com)

"As people do better, they start voting like Republicans... unless they have too much education and vote Democratic, which proves there can be too much of a good thing." KARL ROVE
